Sabbath Keeping – Exposed ! (Part 2)

According to a Seventh-Day Adventist website, in an article titled, What does the Sabbath have to do with salvation?, by Erwin R. Gane…

The Bible teaches that those who receive the gift of Christ’s character will observe His Sabbath as a sign or seal of their spiritual experience. Thus the people who receive the last-day seal of God will be Sabbath-keepers.

http://www.sabbathfellowship.org/biblestudies/erwingane/biblestudy_gane_sabbathsalv.htm

Blasphemy! According to Mr. Gane, keeping the Sabbath is evidence of salvation, just as Charismatics teach that speaking-in-tongues is the initial evidence of being born again. BOTH of these doctrines are lies of the Devil. Sabbath Keepers are false prophets!

Erwin Gane further states…

There is not the slightest hint in the New Testament that the Sabbath was changed or abolished.

http://www.sabbathfellowship.org/biblestudies/erwingane/biblestudy_gane_sabbathsalv.htm

WRONG! Colossians 2:14,16-17 state quite the contrary… “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross… Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” The Old Testament SABBATH was a CEREMONIAL LAW, which pictured Jesus Christ, in whom we rest for the salvation of our souls. This is evidenced by Hebrews 4:2-4, which state…

“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.”

This passage of Scripture clearly evidences the fact that the Sabbath Day was only symbolic of a person’s faith (i.e., solely resting) in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Mankind attempted to work his way to Heaven through self-righteousness, but he utterly failed (Romans 3:19; James 2:10). This is represented by man working 6-days prior to the Sabbath Day. Today, Jesus is our Sabbath, i.e., He is the fulfillment of what the Sabbath Day symbolized. In Christ we rest for salvation. Colossians 2:16,17 state, “…or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come…” A shadow is only cast when the sun is afar off in the distance. Once the sun rises overhead, the shadow vanishes away. Hence, when Jesus Christ fulfilled His earthly mission, He took the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross (Colossians 2:14). There is NO Sabbath Day today. It was nailed to the cross. Jesus has become our Sabbath, and in Him alone we rest for our salvation.

Sabbath Keepers Pervert the Scriptures and Worship the Sabbath

Erwin Gane further states…

When we have true faith in Christ, we will not argue about whether it is convenient to keep holy His Sabbath day. We will do it because Jesus asks us to. Our Sabbath keeping will be the result and the evidence of our faith in Him. We will observe the Sabbath day as a memorial of creation ad a sign of Christ’s work of sanctification in our hearts. Sabbath keeping will be not only a sign of Christ’s work for us, but also an observance that strengthens our relationship with Him. It will be a vital part of our Christian walk and a tremendous blessing to us as we prepare for the seal of God and an eternity with our Lord.

Sabbath Keepers are idolaters, worshipping the creature more than the Creator. You’d think nothing else mattered in life except the Sabbath Day from listening to these heretics. What did God say in Colossians 2:16, “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days” God said not to become misguided by false prophets would try to lead us away from Christ. Carefully read Colossians 2:18,19… “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” The Scriptures are very clear–only Jesus Christ is to be worshipped! Catholics worship Mary. Charismatics worship speaking-in-tongues. Sabbath-Keepers worship the Sabbath. Televangelists worship money. Christians are commanded to worship the Lord! Sabbath Keepers are “vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head…” (Colossians 2:18,19).

Misguided Worship and the Cults

So many false religions are started because people get sidetracked from the main issue–Jesus Christ Himself. One group is off worshipping Mary. Another group is off worshipping Water Baptism. Still yet another group is off worshipping the Lord’s Supper. And now we have the Seventh-Day Adventists (SDA’s) off worshipping the Sabbath. Nothing is more dear to the Catholic than Mary. Nothing is more dear to the Lutheran than Water Baptism. Nothing is more dear to the Pentecostal than speaking-in-tongues. And nothing is more dear to SDA’s than the Sabbath. Truly, nothing should be any more precious to the believer than Jesus Christ Himself, “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious…” (1st Peter 2:7).

The Bible never speaks of the Sabbath as being “precious”; BUT, 1st peter 2:7 calls Jesus PRECIOUS! We also read in the Scriptures about the “precious blood of Christ” in 1st Peter 1:18,19… “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” From the blood sacrifice of Abel, to the saints washed in the blood of the Lamb in Revelation 7:14, the Word of God centers around the blood of Jesus Christ. Yet, Catholics think Mary is precious, when the Bible does not say so. SDA’s think the Sabbath is precious, but the Bible does not say so. Charismatics think speaking-in-tongues is precious, but the Bible never says that. What is precious to you? If you are a genuine child of God, then Jesus Christ and the blood He shed for your sins and mine ought to be the dearest and most precious things in your life.

The doctrine of Sabbath Keeping, as evidence of salvation, is of the Devil. The Apostle John said in 1st John 5:13… “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” Interestingly, John NEVER mentions THE SABBATH. If observing the Sabbath were any type of evidence of being saved, then surely John would have mentioned it, because the entire reason he wrote 1st John was to help believers KNOW they are saved. Do you see how quickly false doctrines and cults are exposed when we shine the Light of God’s Holy Word upon them? This is why Jesus said in John 5:39… SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES!

  1. Interesting blog. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and the Sabbath is fulfilled in Him. Even if Jesus always kept it and God gave the Sabbath to Adam and Eve at Creation week, we are now under a new covenant. Yes the Sabbath Days (holy feast days) were shadows and pointed to Jesus which He fulfilled on the cross. Christians should avoid legalism and adhere to Grace. smile

  2. Joe, I could not have said it better. …Sabbath keeping has NOTHING to do with one’ salvation… We are saved by God’s amazing grace. A lot of these cult groups just don’t get that; they prefer legalism (grace plus good works) to get into heaven which is a doctrine of demons.

I am not going to get into debates,(already did that…pointless) ….I have a posts under the tag of Ronald Weinland about Saving Faith, Good works and Saving faith, the Mosaic Law,and The Blood of Jesus. Here’s a hint though.. We are saved by faith in Jesus to do good works…. If you disagree, that’s your choice, but don’t think you are going to change my theology with rudeness. If you want your contrary (false doctrines) comments published, find a different blog to comment on or start your own.

Click on the above link to see my first post on Sabbath keeping. It gives Biblical proof why Sabbath keeping not only has NOTHING to do with salvation but also is not a requirement for New Testament believers in Christ Jesus.

  4. “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Rev. 14:12).

Revelation 15:2-3: “And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.”

They sing the song of Moses, and the song of the Lamb (Christ). Moses pictures law and God’s commandments; the Lamb (Christ) pictures faith and salvation from sin.

Remember, the beast is the human civil organization of the devil. In Revelation 12, we find Satan stirred to great wrath “because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (v. 12). He then starts a great persecution, or tribulation, against the true Church—the true saints of God. This is just prior to the Second Coming of Christ (v. 10). Now notice against whom Satan is so wroth: “And the dragon [Satan] was wroth with the woman [Church], and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (v. 17).

There it is again! Those keeping God’s commandments—those yielding themselves to God’s rule, and living by every word of God—by the Bible—which is the written testimony of Jesus Christ—they are the ones the devil will persecute…

But back to Exodus 31:17-18. It also is the sign by which we are identified as belonging to God. We belong to whom we obey—so we read in Romans 6:16! It is the sign by which we know He is the Eternal … “that doth sanctify you.” To sanctify is to set apart for spiritual use. The Sabbath sets one apart from the world, and always did—as obeying and belonging to God. Can you think of any reason why anyone would ever keep the Sabbath, except to obey God? Would any man defy human custom and invite persecution, and be set apart as different, through human reason? Could any atheist be a Sabbath keeper? The Sabbath identifies God’s people!

God’s people, we have seen above, are identified as they who keep the commandments. The world acknowledges all the other nine commandments. The only one the world rejects is the Fourth. The only one that sets one apart from the world—that identifies one as belonging to God—that is a sign of God—is the Sabbath.

Notice, verse 16, it is a “perpetual covenant.” It is a covenant! It is no part of the Old Covenant—no part of the law of Moses! It was made with Israel after all these, and is a separate, and perpetual covenant.

Notice verse 17: “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever.” There it is! It is a covenant. It is forever!

The Sabbath commandment is the only commandment the world will not accept in its mind (forehead) and obey (by work, or rest, with the hand). It is the only commandment that can distinguish between those who have the mark of the beast, or the sign of God.

Now the book of Revelation is written mostly in symbols. The right hand symbolizes work or labor—the forehead, the intellect or mind. It has to do with what we believe, in the mind, and whether we obey, with the hand.

How about God’s sign? It also was received in the forehead, and the hand!

Regarding one of God’s annual Sabbaths, we read: “… it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes [forehead], that the Lord’s law may be in thy mouth …” (Exod. 13:9).

Deuteronomy 6:1, 6-8: “Now these are the commandments … And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart …. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.”

Deuteronomy 11:18: “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.”

Also see Proverbs 7:2-3 and Revelation 7:3-4; 14:1.

There is absolute proof! Yes, the truth is very plain!

The Sabbath is God’s sign, standing, more than any commandment, for obedience. It was symbolically in the hand and in the forehead, just as the mark of the beast—the pagan Sunday—was in the right hand and in the forehead!

  5. He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:22)

How do we deny God the Father? By disobeying His Laws… the ten commandments…. You disobey one…. you are guilty of disobeying the ten commandments…..He is the Creator… and a sign of obedience to the Creator is the Sabbath….

  6. Mahalia, Um…..Your wrong…Every command in the Old Testament that Christians are to observe is repeated in the New Testament… Not only are the commands repeated, but often they are much stricter than in the Old Testament.. Christians are never commanded to keep the Jewish sabbath, the seventh day, Saturday… Why? this commandment is not repeated in the New Testament…We are not under the law of Moses to keep the day that was a special sign between God and Israel.

  8. There are many points I could comment on in this and others of your posts. Broadly, I would say that I believe you focus on the wrong issue in “exposing” Sabbath-keeping as a false doctrine. By looking at it as a false doctrine of salvation you miss a portion of Sabbath keepers who don’t see the Sabbath as a means to salvation, but rather as an expression of salvation (that is, “I am saved by grace through Jesus Christ, and my response will be to try to live by the laws that He lived by”).

The main point I would like to respond to, though, is the common misinterpretation of Colossians 2:14. I think the ESV translation makes the correct interpretation very clear: “by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” It is the penalty for sin that Paul is explaining was nailed to the cross, not the law itself. Paul repeatedly upholds the law as good, but emphasises that nobody can achieve righteousness through the law. It is a gross misunderstanding to suggest the law, given by God who is the same yesterday, today and forever is “done away with” – and there are numerous scriptures that attest to this. True understanding is that the law simply defines what is sin and you can’t be made righteous by what defines sin. We are made righteous by Jesus Christ. If we live in Jesus Christ He will conform us to the law: because if the law defines sin, and we are not conformed to the law, we are sinners. Yet there remains forgiveness of sin through Grace because we will stumble numerous times on the path to our final perfection in Jesus Christ.
